Periodontal disease (gum disease) is the inflammatory disease that destroys the gum and supporting structures around the teeth. The disease is caused by bacteria surrounding the teeth and gum tissue. Treatment for periodontal disease ranges from improving brushing, flossing at home and regular cleaning at the dental office for gingivitis (mild gum disease) to scaling and root planning (the cleaning of infected root surfaces) for moderate periodontal disease and finally gum surgery for severe periodontal disease.
