A native of coastal Wilmington, North Carolina, Dr. Smith received his degree in dentistry from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He immediately joined the practice his father, Dr. Clayton B. Smith, Jr. started in 1966. Since taking over the practice, Dr. Smith has worked to continue his father's reputation for gentleness, generosity, and good humor.

His warm sense of humor and gentle care helped him grow his modest family dentistry practice quickly. Dr. Smith's son, "Little Ben, " started helping out his father's practice at an early age.
