TMJ Disorder

Many people are surprised and dismayed at the diversity of symptoms caused by TMJ. How can one illness result in so many symptoms, they ask.
In its simplest form, it’s an irregularity in the function of one or both temporomandibular joints, the joints that link the lower jaw to the skull. This basic dysfunction might take the form of displaced cushioning discs in the jaw joint, or it might be irregular motion or an irregular resting position. For some people, that’s all it is, but for many people, it develops into something much more complex.

The temporomandibular joints are located at the crossroads of the body. Many of the body’s most important nerves pass by or even through the temporomandibular joint. Some of the body’s largest blood vessels are in that area. And the body’s vital airway passes right between the temporomandibular joints.

With such a complex and crowded environment, it’s no wonder that a simple jaw dysfunction can lead to far-ranging effects. Inefficient muscle movements can make the jaw muscles sore—facial pain—and lead the jaw to recruit assistance from neck muscles, causing neck pain. Pinched nerves can lead to headaches, tingling, and numbness. And the ear, with its delicate hearing and balance organs, is actually located in the temporal bone—part of the temporomandibular joint.

Headaches and Migraines

Headaches are one of the most common and generalized symptoms. They can be associated with dozens if not hundreds of illnesses and simple deviations from your daily routine. This means that sufferers often try many different treatments before finding one that works for them. At the Michigan Center for TMJ & Sleep Wellness, we strive for a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms, using an interdisciplinary perspective that considers a broad range of possible causes. If we can help you, we will. If not, we will refer you to someone who can.

To learn whether TMJ treatment can provide relief for your migraines and other types of headaches, please call (248) 825-8277 or email us for an appointment with Detroit dentist Dr. Jeffrey Haddad.
Types of Headaches
Headaches come in many different forms, but most fall into four different categories:

-Tension
-Migraine
-Cluster
-Sinus

Most of them can be associated with TMJ, though, as we noted, there are many different potential causes, so it’s important to explore multiple explanations.

K-Laser TMJ Therapy

We all know the soothing power of heat when your muscles are tense and sore. But If K-laser works by heat, what makes it better than a heating pad or other lasers? There are three reasons why K-Laser is better than other laser therapy methods for heating to heal.

Effectiveness
K-Laser therapy to treat TMJ
K-Laser therapy is very effective at stimulating precise effects that stimulate healing. Most heat sources provide a broad, blunt distribution of heat. While this can sometimes provide the types of heat that are beneficial, it isn’t guaranteed that it will have much or any of the precise types needed to stimulate your body’s healing mechanisms.

However, K-Laser emits light at precise frequencies to stimulate the body’s ability to heal. Light at 970 nm is efficiently absorbed by the water in the blood, which speeds the flow of blood through capillaries to more resources are brought in and more waste is removed. Light at 905 nm stimulates your red blood cells to release oxygen more efficiently. The more oxygen the cells get, the more energy they can use for healing. Finally, light at 800 nm stimulates the action of the mitochondria, the power factory in your cells. This helps cells burn more oxygen to fuel healing.

Snoring

Sound is vibration. In snoring, the origin of the vibration is soft tissues in your airway. These tissues may be in your nose, at the back of your mouth, or in your throat. But all of these tissues are set to vibrating by the same thing: your airway is too narrow.

This narrow airway prevents air from flowing smoothly. The turbulence in your airway causes the vibrations, and, therefore, the sounds that disturb everyone around you.

Causes of a narrow airway include:

-Genetics
-Developmental issues
-Congestion
-Inflammation
-Weight gain
-Relaxed muscles

Many of these, you can work to change. Throat exercises can improve the tone of your muscles, so that even when they relax they do a better job of holding your airway open. You can lose weight. You can identify foods that cause swelling in your throat, and try to combat congestion as it arises. But you can’t do anything about genetics and development—that’s just become your anatomy.

One major contributor to these anatomical problems is temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) . In TMJ, your jaw is displaced from its natural position, typically backward. Since the jaw is the primary support for the tissues of the airway, this leads to a narrowed airway and increased risk of snoring.

That’s where we come in, offering solutions designed to help you overcome the anatomical causes of your snoring.

Sleep Apnea

It can be hard to diagnose because it occurs while you’re asleep. However, during the day you may notice a number of symptoms, such as:

-Sleepiness
-Waking up short of breath
-Morning headaches
-Dry mouth on waking
-Tendency to fall asleep during work or while driving
-Waking up unrested
-Moodiness or irritability
-Sadness
-Memory problems
-Concentration difficulties
-Weight gain or inability to lose weight

I was a bit skeptical because there are so many different treatments and a lot of personal stories I’ve read people say orthotics don’t work. I think they had orthotic and night guard confused though. My regular dentist wanted to make me a night guard, which is great to stop the damage to your teeth but in my experience night guards are super temporary and do nothing to relieve any of the symptoms. The appliances I received at MCTMJS are made for my exact needs. When I met with Dr Haddad and Michelle and they explained how everything was going to work I decided to go for it. I read a bunch of reviews from other patients who said their pain symptoms were relieved. On a pain scale I was a 10/10 every day in my face, jaw, neck and shoulders. Nothing worked for me before. I would chew through night guards, pain meds stopped working and the only thing that helped (barely) was heat (baths and heating pad).

On the 2nd and 3rd visits they took impressions of my upper and lower teeth. I was hooked up to a machine that could read where my proper bite position should be as well as the TENS-ing machine. The tensing relaxed all of my muscles in my face, jaw and neck. Dr. Haddad talked me though the rest during the test (how to position my jaw, biting and relax etc). The tensing immediately relieved a lot of my pain and lasted for 5 days after. I waited 2 weeks for my appliances to be made, set up a payment plan and then came in for the fitting. I received a day appliance that pushes my lower jaw to sit in a the correct relaxed position it should be in and a night appliance that would firmly hold my upper and lower jaw in the correct position. I can’t grind or even clench in the night one. Neither are uncomfortable to wear but the day one took some getting used to, to eat with (about 3 weeks and I didn’t notice it anymore). I never take it out except to brush and when I go to sleep I switch to the night one. So far I’ve been wearing the orthotics for 3 months and I have had little to no pain. I’m so happy I went for it! I go back once a month to check the bite and get the TENS-ing. They started giving me the laser treatment which takes way less time (tensing takes an hour, the laser takes 10 mins). Both are amazing and have immediate and lasting effects especially for my neck and shoulder pain. All of the staff are super helpful and friendly when I come in, they explained everything in full. It’s one dentist appointment I don’t dread going to!

I was suffering for years with chronic pain headaches, what I thought were chronic ear/throat infections and trouble sleeping. I’m knew I had a clenching and grinding problem and some symptoms of TMJ however I did not realize my bite was completely off and causing all these issues until I was seen at Michigan Center for TMJ and Sleep Wellness. After only one month of wearing my orthotic I have had none of the symptoms I was previously experiencing and my headaches were almost daily. I am truly amazed and highly recommend Dr. Haddad. Worth every penny!

Customer Testimonials

About a month ago my wife won a teeth-whitening procedure in a charity auction and gave it to me (humm?). When I arrived, I was impressed with the clean and modern facility and the welcoming and energetic office staff. The medical staff were equally talented and provided a quick and comfortable experience. I was overly satisfied with my experience and cannot find anything but positive things to say about the dental practice. Gifting the procedure to the auction also reflects well on them.

I've struggled with chronic jaw pain since high school and have tried several different methods prior to this (bite splint and jaw surgery). The appliance I got from Dr. Haddad has been the most effective by far. He and Rachel are incredibly nice and helpful, and my chronic pain has really improved.
