Stay Away. I waited til I saw another dentist to make this review. I went in for a tooth extraction. They extracted said tooth in a timely manner but during the extraction I had a terrible experience: not only was the dentist super sassy (one very cocky mahu) & like make you feel like an imbecile because he has a doctorate and you don't, but he was asking me what I wanted to do moving forward treatment wise WHILST I was high.

He asked me what I wanted to do and explained the procedure options while he had already administered nitrous oxide. How am I supposed to make an informed clearheaded decision while I'm intoxicated/on medicine? Not only did his terrible attitude, demeanor, high-Makamakaness leave a sour taste in my mouth but I left feeling somewhat ashamed and humiliated.

A dentist experience is typically already not pleasant, so add to that a dentist who makes you feel less-than & stupid, and an operating room with a FLOOR FAN. Like a ghetto floor fan. And they re-use linens: during COVID.?!? Hard pass. Went to Ala Moana Dental and have had a much better experience. Steer clear of these guys: they are pretty in the reception area & the huge fancy x-ray machines are cool but when push comes to shove their customer service relations & all around experience is TERRIBLE in my opinion.

Very disappointed with my visit today! After today's visit with the orthodontist in the Honolulu location, I am thinking to switch to another doctor. I have been with Hawaii family dental group for 6 years. When I was informed my orthodontist is no longer with the dental group and assure that I will receive the same service with a different orthodontist.

I took a chance and believe in your team and your organization. Today, I saw my orthodontist in Honolulu location for the first time. No introduction. I think it is Dr. Tinhan. Quick in and out within 5 minutes. This is the first visit between patient and doctor, I would think it's not too much to ask to spend 20 minutes with a patient and give full attention.

Ask questions about previous visit and patiently answer any questions. Do his best to keep his new patient at ease. I hope he will take this as constructive criticism and change for the better. As for me, time to find a new doctor!

If you are looking for a great office to get a cleaning this is the place to come. The staff here are all so welcoming! I was greeted with bright smiles at the front, even tho they all was wearing masks I could tell they were cheerful. The office is nice and clean and my hygienist Shanice is a rock star! She made me have such a wonderful experience during my cleaning, we even shared a few laughs. Mahalo to you HFD keep doing such an awesome job taking care of us patients.

Greatly appreciated Dr. Mitz for fitting me in during my dental emergency. Nothing says pain like a tooth gone bad. They fit me in the very next day and had me good as new that same day. Got fitted for a crown and in just 4 hrs later, it was good to go. Even got an opportunity to save some money per the Drs. suggestion. This is why I keep coming back for care. Also, all the assistants are amazing because everyone knows, a good assistant makes even a Dr. better.

EDITED TO ADD: I never post reviews. I always give places a second chance. I do not think this place will receive that from me. I have been to a lot of different dental offices and I have never had a bad experience at the dentist until recently when I visited Hawaii Family Dental. I was there for OVER 2 hours for a cleaning & x-rays, I don't know about everyone else but I have never spent this long at a dental appt.

I have never been to a dentist that has separate appts for the x-rays and cleaning. My appt was scheduled for 2pm, I arrived 15 min early to fill out any paperwork, they got me in pretty quickly after I filled out forms, x-rays were done first (which is typical IMO), then they took me back to have the doctor look at my teeth (this part was unusual to me, as I have never had a doctor check my teeth before a cleaning, it's always been done after.

Not a big deal, just thought it was odd.). After the doctor gave her assessment, the assistant said he was checking to see when my cleaning would be, I then asked "is it not going to be today.?" and he said that he didn't see me on their schedule, but thought I was supposed to get a cleaning done at 3pm and maybe they double booked me. He escorted me to the waiting room to have a seat while he went to confirm (it was 2:20pm by this time).

He came back out and confirmed I would be taken back again at 3pm for my cleaning. At this point, I was not happy that I had to wait 40 min for a cleaning, I have never experienced this before where the cleaning is scheduled at a separate time. 40 min later I was taken to the back again for my cleaning. I sat in the chair for another 20 min waiting for the hygienist, at 3:20pm she came to do the cleaning.

I asked if it would take a while because I had to get back to work and had already been away much longer than anticipated. She assured me the cleaning wouldn't take that long. The cleaning was fine, she was a little rude about my flossing abilities I thought, she was shocked that it had only been 6mo since my last cleaning (which is standard). I paid extra for the fluoride and she said that would be the last thing and left without telling me someone else would be assisting with that, or saying bye. Got my fluoride and was escorted back to the waiting room where the gentleman said to have a seat until someone calls on me to get settled up.

It was 3:50pm when I was sat. By 3:55pm no one had helped me, there was 1 gentleman in the waiting area but I was certain that he was waiting on someone since I saw him earlier with someone. There was a couple already being helped. I was not happy. I finally went up to the desk and asked if someone could please assist me in paying because I had been there for over 2 hours now and that I had to get back to work.

The woman was very shocked that I had been there that long and apologized and found someone to help me right away. I was finally out of there at 4pm. The doctor that I saw, the woman at the front desk, and the gentleman who assisted with my x-rays were all friendly. There are tons of 5star reviews so I am not sure what was going on the day that I visited.

I would just say for anyone who is booking here, just know that your x-rays and cleaning will be scheduled separately VS. being in the same appt. I went with this dental office because it was conveniently located near my apartment and I was able to walk, however I do not see myself ever returning to this office again.

Very dissapointed with the service here. My family member recieved an email (no call/texts) asking to contact them to reschedule. She called them and waited 10minutes with no answer. She called again and same situation. Left a voice mail. Never heard from them. Very upset with how they treated her. Do not recommend.

Dr Mellow from the Kihei office is great. She researched and had a custom sleep apnea mouthguard made for me and it works so well. I was her first patient using this mouthguard. No more sleepless nights! Dr. Mellow is very knowledgeable and wants to do the best for her patients. Excellent customer service.

I had an urgent gum problem and they took me in that very day. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Dr. Mitsunaga (who is my dentist) made the time out of his busy schedule to check it out and recommended that I see a gum specialist right away. He also prescribed antibiotics for the time being to help control the swelling and pain. I was in and out within an hour. Great service! Great dentist! They really care about the patient. Mahalo to HFDS.

I like the way my hygienist cleaned my teeth. She' seemed to be expert on what she was doing to me. Also, she was professional, gentle and approachable. She cleaned very well my teeth which made me feel good and comfortable. Yes, she exceeds my expectation. Thank you and I highly recommend her to others.

I've been a patient of Hawaii Family Dental for a long time and am very satisfied with their entire organization. All smiles, all friendly and professional at all levels of the team. I've been with Dr. Mitzunaga from day one and recommend him highly. I've been with a few different hygenists over time for cleanings and they have all been excellent! AS a bonus to me, their office is located convenient to me in Kaka'ako and the parking is easy and plentiful.

This place is amazing. No fuss, no upselling, no long wait. Additionally, the dental hygienist I had (Tyler) was phenomenal. I have extreme sensitivity on my bottom front teeth due to recession and he worked around it by using a combination of the water pick and metal hand tool to get me cleaned up pain free, all in under 20 minutes. Highly recommended.

I took my daughter who is 2 years old here, and she saw the pediatric dentist idc to even remember his name, but I just got bad vibes from him. First of all the wait was long, then when the dentist finally came in to see my daughter he asks "you guys sisters right?", me replying yes, thinking he was asking if me and my sister were sisters because she also came to help me.

He then said "Yeah I was thinking that, you too young to be mom." Idk if it's just me but I was super offended by that, and I'm 23, imagine if a teen mom took her child here, just made me think like is he judgmental towards teen/young parents? Then when he was capping my daughters molars she cried and fought back the whole time because of course she is in pain, the gas they were giving her was not working and she was scared.

And he had the audacity to comment "oh she doesn't listen yeah.". I was so annoyed at that point took my daughter straight out when it was finished didnt even bother to schedule another appointment because I am never taking her back there. Maybe I'm being dramatic but idc, I didn't get good vibes, my daughter was not comfortable nor did they try to make her feel comfortable. Worse dental experience ever.

Kristi from Kihei office is such a great hygenist always makes my teeth feel so clean gives my smile a shine and instructs me on how I am doing on my personal care. Anabel is also a great front office person makes the visit start out with a friendly greeting and conducts the business of checking in for appt. and payment with a ease gets the correct infotmation for payment and makes sure Covid details are done for the safety of the clinics customers. Feel well taken care of by these two front line workers. Mahalo Ladies Lance B

Received THREE text reminders for appointment on 12/4/2021 and they were closed. See this picture with Saturday crossed out. My first one star Yelp review in years. Got to pay for parking to boot because a closed place can't validate.

Everybody there is fast, friendly, competent and professional. Dr Sterling is absolutely amazing. He was so kind, patient and helpful and didn't get tired of explaining everything to me. He made my wisdom tooth extraction absolutely painless. He was so fast, I didn't even realize that he was already done! The numbness wore off shortly thereafter and I have been painless ever since without having to take any painkillers.

Best dentist experience ever! I was really afraid and they took away all my worries before they started with the procedure. If getting a wisdom tooth pulled was fun, I would almost be looking forward to my next visit there.

The customer service from the front desk to the dental assistant and the dental surgeon to the last clerk we saw for billing was phenomenal! We were well taken care of. I asked my son how the surgeon was during the procedure (extraction of 1 wisdom tooth) and he said that he was great that he didn't feel a thing except the pinch for the numbing. Therefore I agreed to schedule the removal of his other 3 wisdom teeth.

I simply want to thank you Ms. Dee, Dr Sterling and the entire team for making this experience less stressful to both the patient, my 13 year old son (who was initially nervous and anxious before the procedure), and myself as the worried parent.

BLUF: DO NOT TRUST HFD TO CARE FOR YOUR TEETH. IN THEIR WORDS, IT IS "NOT THEIR JOB" AND THE DOCTORS "DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING AT". Hawaii Family Dental (HFD) engages in dental malpractice, insurance fraud, and bad customer service. I trusted the staff here to take care of my teeth, and they did not. I saw Dr. Alan Mitsunaga for a couple years, but asked to switch dentists after a couple appointments where he would dismiss my questions, telling me it wasn't his job to answer them.

I asked to switch dentists, and I was assigned Dr. Weilin Bono. In 2019, the technician taking x-rays failed to take my 3-year full-mouth series despite that being the reason for my appointment. Dr. Bono saw me at that appointment without noticing she wasn't looking at a full set of x-rays. When she was looking at my file and in my mouth, I trusted she was evaluating my entire mouth.

She saw me the following year, too, without realizing my full mouth hadn't been evaluated in 6 years. It wasn't until I requested my full mouth x-rays in January 2021 for an appointment with another dentist to check on another issue that HFD told me that a full-mouth series of x-rays hadn't been taken in 6 years. The Office Manager blamed the technician and said Dr. Bono "didn't know what she was looking at, " then assured me they would fix it.

When I spoke to my insurance company a few months later, nothing was changed and my dental records still showed that a full mouth x-rays had been performed in 2019. When I showed up to my next appointment to fix this issue, the technician, Mary Jane, wouldn't see me because I was 3 minutes past her own personal 10-minute grace period (Office assistant Joy confirmed that the grace period is normally 15 minutes but Mary Jane has accelerated schedule, so decided she couldn't fit me in). HFD fails to provide services scheduled, fraudulently charges me and my insurance company for it, refuses to answer the questions I have, ignores the health of my full mouth for 2 years, and then dismisses me when I show up 3 minutes past Mary Jane's personal grace period. Shame on me for having given them the benefit of the doubt.

Do not make the same mistake I did in trusting that this was a simple series of small mistakes. This dental business does NOT care about their patients and will not take the time to care for your teeth.

Haven't gone to a dentist in 20 years. I finally bite the bullet as I had a few non-painful cavities I could see. I went here because this was my default place of the last known place. My first appointment I got xrayed and got a evaluation by doc. He said I needed to replace all my fillings as they were old. He mentioned couple crowns as my molers were big but not much teeth remaining. Cool.

When I went to pay, my "plan" for next session was about hundred bucks. Cool. Did next session and paid. Np. Next session 350ish and Cool. This is where I have an issue. Yesterday after my 2nd session, I asked doc, what's left? He didn't know and no further plans was on my account. When I went to the payment window, now next session is $1250.

I was like wow, and asked for the whole payment plan. Then they brought out $3500 for all crowns. My issue is that the front ladies act so fakely nice, ask me to sign off on the estimate to pay and then ask for payment immediately. I feel this place after a few appointments, only care about money and collecting immediately. I didn't appreciate not knowing my plan in entirety and not knowing what the cost for everything.

I would definitely not recommend this place as they only seem to want money and to be honest, when I was waiting for my appointment, could hear other patient's ss number, address, and phone number. They are so loud and maybe should take it privately in the back. Not sure if they are PPI compliance and if so, need to be whistle blown. I'll take video next time, last time.

I have gone to Hawaii Family Dental for many years, with mixed results. On February 16, 2021 I went there for an exam, because my teeth are a bit of a mess. I haven't had insurance much during the covid lockdowns and the previous year before that. Anyhow, I am experiencing constant pain, have open nerves in my mouth, and several chipped teeth that are sharp and tend to cut my tongue.

I went in for x-rays and the young lady who did my X-rays was cheerful, helpful, and easy to work with. After the Xrays Doctor Alan Mitsunaga came in and took a glance at my x-rays and then told me that he wants to pull out all of my teeth and give me dentures, and that he wants to refer me to someone else who can do that. First off, we did not discuss options- he just went immediately to that.

I told him that I am not completely comfortable just going straight to pulling all of my teeth and getting dentures, and that I am going to have to think about it and see someone else for a second opinion. It's a huge decision at 55- not something you just do without looking at your options. I asked Doctor Mitsunaga if he could fix a chipped tooth in the front that shows when I smile, and makes it challenging for me to do my work.

He said no- that he didn't want to do just the little stuff, or something to that effect. I was a bit surprised and said okay, and left. Today at work as I was experiencing some extreme pain in my teeth, I thought about our exchange and found his reaction puzzling. Why did he say he didn't want to fix some of the small stuff? They have done work on one (single) tooth for me before several times. Was he upset that I didn't take his advice at face value and just agree to do it?

I do not know. Now I have had to make an appointment at another dentist and they cant see me until April 26, which means I can look forward to navigating this pain for another two months. I really like most of the staff at Hawaii Family Dental, but I'm afraid I'm at a bit of an impasse with them. Huge bummer, but I'm sure I will survive this also. Aloha- Toby Gibson.

The staff in Ewa beach are very friendly and approachable. They are fast pace when they are taking care of their patients. They are very systematic and know what they are doing. I also love calling their concierge who is very politely answering all our questions and request. Kudos to all the service and to my Awesome dentist Dr. Shin!

First teeth cleaning during the covid pandemic. Always felt safe with the hygienists and the amount of ppe they use during the cleaning. Additional measures they take now are spacing out seats in the waiting area, hand sanitizers, and take your temperature when you walk in. Felt totally safe coming here

The billing department is absolutely ridiculous! (Yes, lets go with those choice of words.) We were billed 7-10years ago and paid them $7000 and more straight out of pocket. Well, our insurance paid them and they have been hiding from us since. We've had that credit on our account for years. And every single time we would ask them for refund, each employee was clueless, tuck their tails and run!

I signed a paper, the lady said she would turn it in to management so they can issue my credit but I haven't heard from them since. I did that about 4 years ago! WHO ARE YOUR AUDITORS? OUR, not just my own account, should have been A MAJOR RED FLAG! Every front desk employee we have spoken too had the same reaction of how much money we had on file.

We should be charging you guys interest! If it weren't for my hygienist and dentist, I would take my business elsewhere! But lately I've been having troubles finding an open appt.

What makes me return to Hawaii Family Dental's Waterfront Plaza location is orthodontist Dr. Wendell Hoshino. He is a humorous, friendly, and trustworthy doctor. I never have to worry about being ripped off with unnecessary services and products. Dr. Hoshino is an expert at his job, and is up front about what I need as well as what I don't need, in order to maintain my straight teeth.

I admit that I haven't been the best orthodontic patient. Why? Because I hate wearing my removable wire retainer! My previous orthodontist was also a good doctor who thankfully put in a fixed retainer across the back of my lower and upper front teeth to prevent too much shifting. Dr. Hoshino gave me a free consultation when I first moved to Hawaii.

Later that year, my upper fixed retainer popped out while eating an apple. Dr. Hoshino removed the rest of the retainer, also free of charge. This year, my lower fixed retainer finally popped. Dr. Hoshino removed that as well, and recommended that I get a new lower fixed retainer to keep my teeth from shifting, since I refuse to wear my removable retainer at night.

I had a custom made lower retainer put in and went in recently for a check-up. Unlike many doctors who charge exorbitant fees just for a consultation or ten-minute check-up, Dr. Hoshino does not do that at all. He will charge a fair price for his services, as well as for any products that you will need to purchase, but he does not overcharge or add on superfluous charges for a brief check-up.

The process for scheduling an appointment isn't always the smoothest. Whenever I call Hawaii Family Dental, it can take a while to be connected with a receptionist at the Waterfront Plaza office, and oftentimes, there isn't anyone there to answer the phone. I have had to leave messages and call back again because I don't receive a return call.

I complained that no one reminded me about an appointment I missed earlier this month and no one followed up to reschedule. It makes me think the administrative staff are not very good with keeping track of appointments. A perk that Yelpers should take advantage of is the free toothpaste with every check-in. Go to the front desk over at the dental side and the receptionist will redeem your offer. I recommend the Waterfront Plaza location as a convenient place to get orthodontic and dental services for those who live and work in Kaka'ako.
