At Dental Sleep Medicine of Athens, Dr. Phillip Durden and Team provide oral healthcare services in conjunction with medical professionals for management and treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), TMJ (jaw joint) disorders and myofascial pain disorders. Athens dentist Dr. Phillip Durden has practiced in the Winterville-Athens area since 1989.

In addition to his education in general and implant dentistry, he has completed advanced training in dental therapies for management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), chronic snoring, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD) and craniofacial pain.
Services
Dental Sleep Medicine of Athens was originally formed by Dr. Bob Ward and Dr. Bob Waugh as a service to the community to assist patients with oral sleep appliances for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). For over two decades, sleep physicians have referred OSA patients that are CPAP intolerant to Dental Sleep Medicine of Athens for evaluation and treatment.
I love getting to know our patients and helping them understand the importance of sleep and how it can affect their lives. It means a lot to all of us when we see the positive impact that proper sleep can have on their health and personal outlook as they start feeling better. Laura began her career in healthcare as an orthodontic assistant in 1989.
We are honored to share the testimonials of patients that Dr. Durden was able to assist with services for relief of jaw pain, headaches and migraines. Jamie talks about how TMJ treatment helped her with difficulty in opening her mouth, headaches and neck pain. The complexity of TMJ disorders and linked conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, teeth grinding (bruxism) and clenching and myofascial pain is of special interest for Dr. Phillip Durden in his practice at Dental Sleep Medicine of Athens and his Athens dental office, Winterville Dental.
Hypopnea is slowed, shallow, restricted breathing that occurs in 10-second or longer 'episodes' repeatedly during sleep. Hypopnea episodes often occur along with sleep apnea events that cause the body to stop breathing completely for a few seconds until the brain tells it to wake up. A patient may endure a recurring cycle of hypopnea episodes followed by apnea events throughout the night.

I've tried three types of Cpaps and none of them have given me any relief. That is why I went to Dr. Durden at Dental Sleep Medicine of Athens. He is so thorough and professional. This new device he prescribed has been a blessing. He is extremely knowlegeable and will go to the ends of the Earth to explain how the device works. His assistant Laura is such a kind heart.

She is more like visiting family than a medical office. I am at a loss for words to explain how wonderful the exterence has been. My wife very much appreciates the end of my snoring. Highly recommend Dr. Durden for any sleep issues you may have.

Dr. Waugh was a fantastic Orthodontist for my son. Since that time he has changed over to Healthy Smiles. Now that I need to have braces put on my daughter I can't get a single person to call me back. I have called and spoken with multiple people who promise to get back to me but I never hear anything. I has been 2 months I still haven't heard back despite 3 phone calls.
