A small amount of blood may be expected during the first 24 - 48 hours. Do not spit as this will increase bleeding. If there is blood in your mouth, you can wipe it with a tissue or gauze. Bleeding can be controlled by biting on a gauze pad placed directly on the wound for 20 minutes. If bleeding is excessive or continues, please call for further instructions.
A certain amount of bleeding, pain, and swelling is normal. Reduce your activity as much as possible for several hours. Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours. Do not drink through a straw or spit. These activities may hinder formation of a blood clot, which is necessary for proper healing. It is important to drink a large volume of cold liquids during the first 24 hours following your procedure. After surgery, you may experience jaw muscle stiffness and a limited opening of your mouth. This is normal and should improve in 7 to 14 days.
You can promote faster healing and reduce post-operative complications if you follow the instructions that are given to you at the office. It is normal to experience some temporary discomfort and swelling for the first 2-4 days. Your healing time will also depend on proper oral hygiene to keep the surgery site clean (i.e., rinsing and brushing after every meal).
